Saigon Plaza to host Taskforce art auction

by Rebecca Strong

Cleveland-More than 300 art lovers will gather at Saigon Plaza on Saturday, April 17 for Art Cares, an annual auction and party to benefit the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland.

This year's party features delectables by Marigold Catering, martinis by Twist Social Club and music by DJ Mister Bradley P. But the centerpiece of Art Cares is always the live auction of art, generously donated by professional artists living in, or with

connections to, Northeast Ohio. Auctioneer Karolyn Isenhart will preside over the sale of original paintings, drawings, artist prints and more. A silent auction will feature work donated by students of the Cleveland Institute of Art, who compete for a $1,000 first prize for best student work.

Art Cares raised more than $40,000 last year. The event is the signature fund-raiser for the AIDS Taskforce, which serves individuals and families affected by HIV and AIDS. Proceeds help provide services such as counseling and case management, edu-

cational programs for adults and youth at risk, and a food pantry that provides muchneeded help for a community in which illness often coincides with poverty.

Tickets, $100 and $50, are available by calling the Taskforce at 216-357-2223. VIP cocktails begin at 6 p.m. The general reception and auction start at 7 p.m. Saigon Plaza is located at 5400 Detroit Ave in Cleveland.

Celebrate Passover with Chevrei Tikva

by Paul Zeitzew

Cleveland-Passover is the Jewish holiday celebrating the passage of the Jews from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land we now call Israel. Gentiles celebrate Passover since the Last Supper was the seder commemorating Passover. The LGBT community observes the holiday as a celebration of freedom.

The eight-day holiday begins with a seder service the first evening, which this year is March 29. Family and friends gather around the dining room table. A book called Hagadah is set at each person's plate.

Early in the evening, the youngest in the room asks "The Four Questions," based on "Why is this night different from all other nights?" The answer is the telling of how Moses, with God's help, led the Jews away from slavery.

In the middle of the evening a sumptuous meal is served. Traditional foods include matzo ball soup, gefilte fish, brisket, chicken, vegetables and dessert. There are ritual glasses of wine throughout the evening. The remainder of the evening is filled with songs and a few additional prayers.

Prompt starting time will be 5 pm and the cost is $40 (more if you can, less if you can't). There is a discount for children under 12, and children under 6 are free.

Paul Zeitzew is a member of the Chevrei Tikva Chavurah of Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple.

Cleveland-These are the standings for the Shooters Pool League at the end of the games on March 15.

This is the seventh season of an annual pool league which shoots on Monday nights from October through April. Although it is a semicompetitive league, all skill levels may compete as matches are based on individual handicaps. A team is made up of 4 to 7 players. Play begins at 7:30 pm at the home team's bar, where four matches are played each week consisting of as many games as necessary for one player to win as many games as their handicap.

For more information, contact the league by calling Dave at 440-871-4699 or buteohawk1@att.net.
